Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to common electrical questions
How often should I have my home's electrical system inspected?
We recommend having your home's electrical system inspected at least every 3-5 years, or immediately if you notice any warning signs like flickering lights, burning smells, frequently tripped breakers, or outlets that feel warm to the touch. Older homes (25+ years) should be inspected more frequently, and an inspection is always a good idea before purchasing a new home.
What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a fuse?
Both circuit breakers and fuses protect your electrical system from overloads, but they work differently. A fuse contains a metal strip that melts when overloaded, requiring replacement. A circuit breaker is a switch that trips and can be reset. Modern homes use circuit breakers because they're more convenient and safer. If your home still has a fuse box, we recommend upgrading to a circuit breaker panel for improved safety and convenience.
Why do my lights flicker?
Flickering lights can be caused by several issues: loose bulbs, faulty light switches, voltage fluctuations, overloaded circuits, or loose wiring connections. Occasional flickering during storms is normal, but persistent flickering should be inspected by a licensed electrician as it could indicate a serious wiring problem that poses a fire hazard.
What should I do if an outlet sparks?
If you see sparks from an outlet, immediately unplug any devices and avoid using that outlet. A brief blue spark when plugging in an appliance can be normal, but large sparks, yellow or white sparks, sparks accompanied by a burning smell, or sparks that occur without plugging anything in are dangerous. Turn off the circuit breaker for that outlet and call a licensed electrician immediately.
How much does it cost to upgrade an electrical panel?
The cost of upgrading an electrical panel typically ranges from $1,500 to $4,000, depending on the amperage upgrade (100 amp to 200 amp is common), your home's existing wiring condition, permit requirements, and any additional work needed. A 200-amp panel upgrade is recommended for modern homes with high electrical demands. We provide free estimates and can assess your specific needs.
